10 160 Girls Virtual Justice Club Awards

The inaugural Dr. Ngeyi Kanyongolo 160 Girls Virtual Justice Club Leadership Awards celebrated 10 young VJC leaders driving justice in their schools and communities. Among them, 14-year-old Iddah Atieno courageously reported three defilement cases in her village using the VJC Help Request tool, ensuring survivors’ access to justice. Her story reflects the bravery and leadership shared across all the awardees—learn about the inspiring stories of the VJC Award winners.

2 160 Girls Justice Stakeholder Kickoffs

E² recently launched two cornerstone justice initiatives in Kenya: the 160 Girls Prosecution Training Scale Up and the 160 Girls Judicial Pilot. Both initiatives have been met with strong enthusiasm from justice sector partners, who praised the trauma-informed, equality-focused approach as a best practice for handling defilement cases.  The Office for the Department of Public Prosecutions reports that prosecutors are literally lining up to receive the 160 Girls training.  The Chief Justice of Kenya, Lady Justice Martha Koome, opened the 160 Girls Judicial pilot and noted the international relevance and value of 160 Girls, and Hon. Lady Justice Agnes Murgor, Past President, International Association of Women Judges–Kenya, closed the pilot, noting that the 160 Girls judicial engagement “will revolutionize the judicial treatment of defilement.”
This update from a recently trained 160 Girls judge captures the project impact, “Thanks so much for the training. I have just experienced what Dr. Lori was talking about. A witness, though a boy (victim of sodomy), has just fainted when he saw the accused person. After recovering, the prosecution and defence counsel insisted we go on with the hearing. I almost told them they need lessons on trauma from Dr. Lori. Thanks so much for the lessons. It’s real. I have just adjourned.”
Many thanks and deep gratitude to e²’s 160 Girls Prosecution & Judicial Curriculum team members: Teresa Donnelly, Prosecutor Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General, Sexual Violence Advisory Group; Dr. Lori Haskell, CM, clinical psychologist and expert on the impact of trauma on sexual assault victims; Prof. Jennifer Koshan, Research Excellence Chair in Family Violence, University of Calgary; Dr. Ruth Nekura, e² Curriculum Coordinator; Dr. Melanie Randall, Faculty of Law, University of Western Ontario; Dr. Fiona Sampson, CM, e² CEO/President; Patricia Simiyu, e² Program Officer.
