e² is thrilled to share our exceptional human rights successes – transformative stories of humility, empowerment and access to justice.

160 Girls Police Training – Access to Justice for Child Rape Survivors and Perpetrator Accountability

The 160 Girls Defilement Investigation Training team has made huge progress on curriculum development, Police College training, training of field officers and their supervisors, evaluation and measurement, etc. To date, 186/492 Officers in Command of Station have received the 160 Girls Defilement Investigation training. Trainees have shared powerful feedback about the course:

  • “It is the best initiative for fighting for justice for victims of defilement,” “The best ever. I have changed my attitude on the way to handle defilement investigations,” “God given,” “Wake up call course,” “Eye opener.”
  • “It was the best training I have ever experienced in the police service,” “From today at my station I promise that a change will be seen in matters relating to defilement.”
  • Officers are committed to conducting “prompt, proper, effective and professional defilement investigations (quoting the 160 Girls High Court decision),” “handling defilement victims in a better way,” “disseminating what [they] learned to [their] juniors, and fast-tracking defilement investigations.”
  • 100% of trainees acknowledged that their knowledge of children’s rights and human rights increased as a result of the 160 Girls course.

After completing the 160 Girls defilement investigation training course, trainees return to their stations to deliver the curriculum to their junior officers. The efficacy of this model is evident: 73% of defilement victims experience access to justice in 1-3 months of reporting to 160 Girls trained police.

160 Girls VJC – Equality Education Today, For a Safer Tomorrow

Over 2000 young students have participated in the 160 Girls Virtual Justice Clubs (VJC) this year, through a very successful community-based tablet sharing model. The 160 Girls Justice Journal has been an amazing opportunity for VJC leaders to share their knowledge with more community members than ever before! Valerie, a 13 year old girl from Homa Bay County, shared: “I love being a VJC champion for girls’ rights. I love when store keepers and community members recognize me and sign out ‘Yea – 160 Girls!’ I feel strong and important because of 160 Girls.”

Children have joined forces with teachers, parents, police, rape rescue workers, village elders, and other community leaders to deliver the Justice Journals and share valuable information about women/children’s rights, sexual/gender-based violence and pathways to justice for survivors. One parent shared: “This training has made me see the importance of listening to our children.” Village elders have supported VJC participants as agents of change who can work with their communities to create a future free from SGBV. Community members have reached out to ask how their children can become involved! We are now responding to requests for widespread distribution of the Justice Journal in schools, libraries, child protection offices, etc.

Thank you for your invaluable interest and generous support in making the 160 Girls success a reality – we are so grateful. Looking forward to keeping you posted on more e² success in the future, as we continue to make girls’ rights real, with your help.
