With meaningful access to justice now becoming the reality for defilement survivors, the equality effect is pleased to report on another exceptional year thanks to the support of all e²’s staff, partners, volunteers, funders and stakeholders, like you. Please click here to read the equality effect’s 2021/22 Annual Report.
This year’s annual report focuses on the measurement of e²’s unique human rights work. Our goal in measuring the work we have done is to demonstrate the links between human rights law and the impacts of our equality initiatives. Measurement is an essential tool that we use to tangibly express the results of our work and create increased transparency.
Perhaps one of this year’s most significant achievements is that, with the equality effect’s police training, in 2021/22, 73 % of defilement victims saw their perpetrators arrested within three months of reporting the defilement to police. For context, the High Court of Kenya ruled in 2013 that 100 percent of the 160 Girls who sued the government for failing to protect them from being raped, did not receive justice. With your support, e² will continue to focus on ending impunity for child rape in Kenya and beyond.
We hope you find our annual report enlightening and useful in understanding e²’s innovative human rights work, accomplishments, and impact. One of our volunteers, Yvonne Kemunto puts it nicely when she said: “The most rewarding part of this (e²) work is seeing how empowered the girls in the Virtual Justice Clubs (VJC) are. Whether it’s through their testimonials, which are nothing short of amazing, or hearing from them on how much this project has helped them, it’s clear how impactful this work is.” That VJC empowerment is clearly expressed by VJC leader Janet, who stated, “The VJC made me feel like a true leader; one day I will be President of Kenya!”
Thank you for your continued interest in the equality effect’s unique human rights work, making girls’ and women’s rights real – we hope you enjoy learning about the human rights progress achieved with your support.
